565 Service: Children Support

Our 565 Service provides emotional support for children, young people and families living with a family member with progressive illness.

The service also provides bereavement support following the loss of a loved one, via family meetings, one to one support and group work.

As well as families, we are here to support schools and professionals who work with children dealing with bereavement.

Where do you offer support?

We offer support to young people aged 5-18 in East & Mid-Suffolk whose loved one is known to St Elizabeth Hospice.

We also offer bereavement support, which extends to families who may not have had previous involvement with the hospice, whose loved one died from a life-limiting or progressive illness.

Support may include:

  • Advice and guidance to parents and family members on how to talk about death and dying, what to expect in grief behaviours and what might help
  • Conversations with the child’s school about support needs and how this might be best managed.
  • Child and parent sessions to help express emotions
  • Group activities with other children of a similar age
  • Confidential space to the child or young person, either online or face to face, to explore their experiences and encourage ways of expressing and managing emotions
  • Where appropriate, we may signpost to other organisations.

If you do not fit this criteria, our LivingGrief Hub can signpost you.

Amelie’s Experience

“The hospice have been really supportive because they have done lots of things that have cheered me up and helped me when I’m feeling sad about losing Daddy.”

“After losing his brother, Jack, Matthew was having a tough time with grief.

“We first heard about the 565 Service through Matthew’s school and, shortly after, he began attending the 565 group sessions, which he really enjoys and benefits from.

“The 565 Service has given Matthew the tools and confidence to express his emotions, which he previously found difficult.

“It’s made a big difference to him – and to us as a family.”

“I found it hard to speak to Eliza about her grief, and she found it hard to talk openly about it to me.

“We have had support from a separate family counsellor, which has been good, but the 565 group sessions have been something she really enjoys and is excited to attend.

“Attending the sessions helped her connect with other children who share similar experiences.

“For me, it’s been equally beneficial to meet other parents.”

“Before receiving support from 565, our granddaughter used to be quite anxious and felt different to other children after losing her dad, but 565 has brought her great reassurance.

“Through the sessions, she’s made new friends and is always excited to attend. She can express herself, have fun, and explore her grief through creative activities like making a beautiful memory jar for her dad.

“565 has had such a positive impact on her. It’s given her a sense of belonging with children who share similar experiences, so she no longer feels like the odd one out.”

Grace’s Experience

“565 Service lets you know that you’re not alone. There are others experiencing similar feelings to you.

“Grief is scary at first, but the 565 Service’s support soon makes you feel safe and helps guide you through your grief journey.”
